26 Feb Cities of life
I want to reflect on the concept of generational, individual, and family journey, which is linked to terms like success, widely associated with money, growth, work, and sacrifice. I believe we have several “destinations,” places to reach at specific moments in our lives, because as human beings we are on a journey, in transition, constantly moving, as life is never static. It’s like taking a train from point A to point B; both places represent a specific season or moment in our lives, and in those places we can learn something about ourselves, grow, meet people, and even outgrow them. Each stop on this journey symbolizes a phase of our lives, and we carry with us the impact of each place and the people we meet along the way.
Let’s say you start your journey in Rome, born and raised. It’s the place where you begin your life, it’s your bubble, your crib. You learn to navigate that place, from your childhood home, your neighborhood, to your school—it all becomes part of your identity. Now, from the first place, you can decide to move somewhere else, Florence, and when you’re there, someone or a specific situation may direct you to another place, like Barcelona, which can either be your dream “destination” or just another stop along the way. The thing is every place, person or situation we encounter in this complex journey that is life, play a strong role in shaping us into the person we’ll ultimately become, as we carry their impact with us.
I think what happens a lot of time is that we miss coincidences, because of missed or lack of opportunities or simply because we’re deeply rooted in a specific place, a situation, a certain lifestyle, and we can go on and on, and because of that we miss the train that was supposed to bring us from place Rome to Florence and we end up in Venice, which implies missed opportunities in Florence. Of course, if you’re in Venice, you’ll have new opportunities, but what if you were in Florence, what would happen if you were where you’re supposed to be in a specific season of your life. What if, in this new place you end up, in this case Venice, what if you get stuck in circumstantial situations that do not allow you to be the best version of yourself? Not being sufficiently stimulated by your environment, your job, meeting the wrong person, making the wrong decisions—all of this leads to feeling out of place, confused, or even worthless, living a stagnant life. As we know, a single decision can change the entire course of your life, so being in the right place can too.
Just remember that life is a journey, we move from place to place, carrying with us the impact of each one.
